State Parks are a great place to go on vacation. There are literally thousands of state parks in the United States. Many of these sites are protected in Michigan. Holland State Park is one of those places. It is a beautiful stretch of beach and sand. It's an impressive place to put on your flip flops or sandals and take a relaxing stroll along while enjoying sunrise or sunset. In the winter it is a fantastic place to visit some country skiing or ice fishing.

What is a state park? You ask, and how they differ from their domestic counterparts? According to the Encyclopedia is "an area of land preserved for its natural beauty, historic interest recreation or other reason, and under the administration of the government of a U.S. state. Mexico and Australia have the same name. They are very similar to national parks, under state regulation but not federal. In general, smaller than national ones, with few exceptions, like the Adirondack Park in New York.

In the U.S., state parks have a longer history than national. In 1864, when the federal government saw the need to protect Yosemite Valley, President Abraham Lincoln gave the land to California as a state park. The reason behind this was that, while the preservation of land for the public was seen as a good role of states and not the federal government. Later the state park was incorporated into Yosemite National Park. It is believed that the oldest state park is India's Georgia Springs State Park.

Holland Park is the perfect definition of a government protected the park. Offers a wide sandy beach along Lake Michigan, two camps and a beautiful, beautiful view. The land is divided into two separate units, one along Lake Michigan and the other along Lake Macatawa. The green space was acquired from the city of Holland in December 1926. Since then it has been extensively used for its great beach and excellent camps.

Recently we had a very pleasant visit to Holland in Netherlands Michigan State Park. We rented a house so close to the lake as possible. We spent our time swimming, hiking, boating and fishing. From the look of things, that have hiked all the way to the left side of Michigan, until he would go to Traverse City and Mackinaw City and not get to the end of the beach. Or maybe to the south until we arrived in Chicago. The beach at Holland Park in the State of Michigan must be reached by walking for one mile along a sandy path through the woods. This beach is usually a very small number of swimmers and bathers and often is empty. August is the best time to visit this beach, so water has time to warm up. At night observed the sunset makes a dinner of fresh fish and finish with a cap of the night playing cards.

Each beautiful, green expanse of land and water features visitors different ways to enjoy nature. With almost 3675 state parks in the United States, there really is something for everyone!
