The 2nd generation of spy DVR pen offers some much needed improvements, and makes it one of the video recorders digital secrecy and discreet on the market. If you are a private investigator, law enforcement, concerned parents or spouse, or simply like having the latest gadgets, the DVR Pen Spy update allows you to record video with sound in an innocent pen that actually writes.
The pen DVR is very easy to handle. Once you charge it for 2-3 hours, press the button at the top of the pen to turn it on. The status light in the back of the pen will turn red, indicating it is in standby mode. This is different from the version above that was yellow in standby mode. To start recording, press the top button once and the status light flashes twice every 3-4 seconds, letting you know that pen is recording. Again, unlike the previous version, as it turned blue to know they were recording.
Press the top button to stop recording and return to standby mode, the red light. You can record again by pressing the top button once, or turn the DVR Spy Pen off by pressing the top button down for 3 seconds or until the pen is turned off. If you ever have problems with the pen, it will not turn on or off, try a hard reset. Open a paper clip and paste one of the ends in the hole below the status light in the back of the camera. If you insert directly into the pen, when it encounters resistance, and press lightly to be reintroduced pen.
The 2nd generation Digital Video Spy Pen offers several improvements over the previous version. This pen is completely black, not stainless steel pen. The pocket clip is also black, as distinct from the previous version. Color video has been expanded to 640 x 480 of the previous 352 x 288, quite a big difference size, but maintaining a clear 15fps per second. Now there is a clear time and date stamp on the video that is updated automatically. Set the time zone is as easy as save a text file with the time converted into numbers in your area.
A major improvement is audio quality. The audio is clear and has no zoom robotic cash or buzz that was the 1st generation. When you view the recorded video, which does not sound like a robot is speaking.
Another major improvement is that it is better low-light situations. Works best in a well lit environment, however, it shows a grainy video in low light situations. The video of the previous version too dark when was filmed in low light, however, the new version, you can see the images and if you hold the camera steady. We're not sure how this was done, although it is certain that decent work in low light.
Finally, the DVR Pen will be displayed on a desktop computer Apple as a flash drive and open called NO NAME iPhoto, which for all purposes is still useless with videos. Quitting iPhoto and go get the drive on the desktop called "NO NAME". Inside you will see a folder named "DCIM".
In what is a folder called "100MEDIA", which will host all the videos. Drag the files to 3gp to save desk. Double clicking a file opens the QuickTime player on my iMac running 10.5.4, and the video is beautiful and sound. Another Mac with OS 10.4.11 also showed drive on the desktop.
Running Parallels and Windows XP, we can not find the DVR Pen is not there and we are not sure why Apple Parallels is not letting reading drive. Rebooting in XP in Boot Camp, the disk appears in "My Computer" and I can access the files, but Windows can not handle them so you have to open Video Lan or other viewer to play the movies.
If you need to record video in situations where a normal camera would a distraction, it is necessary to record video on a moments notice, or the latest gadgets, the second generation of DVR Spy Pen will be of interest.
