/Why no black athletes at the Winter Olympics?
You never see a black medal in a sporting event together, but the means of communication always tell us how the black track athletes know it is a lie and is based only on the specific sport! Where are the athletes black in the gym, except the long jump field events, cycling, weightlifting, golf except Tiger, excluding Tennis Williams sisters, motorsports, extreme sports, hockey, lacrosse, wrestling, etc! I see sports in the past 20 years and hundreds of athletic events to see blacks only management and basketball, plus all the positions of American Football, which require running, so where's the black people in most sports?
In a simple word, there are few or no people of color in these sports you mentioned, for two reasons: lack of money, and lack of exposure or opportunity. Cultural norms in some places also prevent more people of color from being involved in at least some of these sports. Of course, the people involved motor sports like NASCAR are not considered athletes, because they do nothing but sit on their butts and drive a race car. That's not athletic, not a shot long. The reason that drivers are not more black on NASCAR or the Indy Racing League is because most black people can not afford to participate, and no barriers Cultural still keep them away. NASCAR is still primarily a southern phenomenon, and because this is true, the old barriers to black participation still exist. As for sports like golf, tennis, cycling, etc, money is the main reason that people are not more color in these sports, and that the lack of available models to encourage more young people of color to participate. Most blacks can not afford sports such as golf or tennis, and can not afford to live in areas where these sports are prevalent. The same is true for gymnastics, figure skating (in large measure, although there have been some successful black skaters like Debi Thomas, now a top surgeon) and hockey, soccer and lacrosse. Participating in sports and follow, which are the equestrian sports have the same problem. They are also like Lilly white as snow, much to the chagrin of people like me, who yearn for the day when someone will finally break the color barrier. We desperately need people color in these sports, but again, lack of money, resources for training, and available models tends to keep children and youth who otherwise might be interested in them away. Public perceptions about riding being called "gay" sport does not help either. Horseback riding is no more "gay" football, in fact, it is a LOT less. But most horse sports, like most sports in general, are controlled and were invented for Caucasians. Regarding the media, who love to sensationalize and blow things out of proportion and sports are among the worst of the lot when it is this. There are times that some NFL players have been treated like gods by the media, which in turn, just encourages these players (most of whom are functionally illiterate, or nearly so) to engage in reckless or illegal behavior. We all remember Atlanta in operation (now Philadelphia) of Michael Vick is a dog-fighting ring, and betting on the outcome of the fighting, not us. Well, that's an example of the kind of thing that happens when the media glamorized and focuses too much on someone who does not deserve it. It is known that the rate of domestic violence and violence peaks on Super Bowl Sunday in this country, all police agencies in the country have stories to tell about the tragedies that have occurred on that Sunday, because too many guys got drunk with beer and took out his angst in their wives or girlfriends. Super Bowl day is one of the most dangerous days of the year for women, in fact, not a damn what race of women is. That is sad, but true. Money makes the world go round, and this is as true for the sports world as it is the business, but advertising also plays its own role.
